Parish Records

Because parish Communion records are listed by village and farm name and because farm names often were used as a part of a person’s name, it is interesting to note the following farms. HisKi project findings were used as a starting point to identify parish villages.  Then Parish Communion Records of 1869–1878 were used to confirm villages and identify farm names.  11, 12

When looking at parish records, you may notice these words:

  • ‘Hantsverkare’ translates to craftsman or artisan.
  • ‘Tjånare‘ translates to servant.

Parish History

In the 1300’s Sibbo encompassed a very large area.  The parishes of Tusby, Kerava,  Träskända and Vanda were once a part of Sibbo. 2

  • Completed in the 1450s
  • Medieval grey stone
  • Built by an annonymous builder (referred to as the master of Pernaja), who also designed the Borgä, Pernä and Pyttis churches
  • Built at the:
    • crossroads of King’s Road [leading from Åbo (Turku) to Viburg (Viipuri)]
    • road leading to the coast [the medieval road from Tusby (Tuusala)]
    • the banks of the Sibbo River

  • Church consecrated in 1885
  • Planned by Theodor Decker
  • Built when the ‘old church’ became too crowded as the congregation grew
