Santa Claus and Reindeer

Julkalender, Day 10 —Learn about Santa Claus in Finland and his stable of reindeer

Most any Finn will tell you with certainty that Santa’s home is in Finland. Indeed, you can Google it and  find that he lives with his wife, elves and reindeer in Lapland at the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland  (https://www.visitrovaniemi.fi/). Although it’s hard to determine Santa’s beginnings in Finland, it is  without question that he is fluent in both Swedish and Finnish, as well as nearly every other language in  the world.

The Finns have the excellent good luck of living so close to Santa that they can expect to receive a visit  from him early in his trip around the world on Christmas Eve. The Finnish Broadcasting Company,  Yleisradio, sponsors a Christmas Even call-in program for children to talk to Jultomte before his evening departure. Yleisradio also sends out a video clip each year showing Jultomte’s take off.

Also conveniently located in Finland’s Lapland are reindeer herds owned and managed by Finland’s Sami,  the indigenous people of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Northern Russia. Forest reindeer in the wild are  also seen in Finland. It’s unclear whether Jultomte acquires his flying reindeer from the Sami herds or  whether he and his elves find this special breed in Finland’s forests. Since reindeer training is a long  process, it’s sure that his elves are kept busy with the Christmas herd.

We, all around the world, own a debt of gratitude to the Finns and Finland for providing the perfect  home for Jultomte and his reindeer who keep Christmas magic alive each year.
