Ways to help at home

Genealogy & Translation

  1. Work on queries for fellow members.
  2. Research information about emigrants whose lives have been partially documented on DEE records. Your help will give a more complete picture of the emigrant’s life.
  3. Participate in the Northern State Hospital research project.

We are seeking both Swedish and Finnish translators for letters and personal writings such as journals, poems, and family stories, as well as for library references.

Research

We are looking for Swedish, Finnish, and English readers to help answer questions received at the SFHS office.

Examples of questions include:

  • An inquiry from an architect about the maker of the stained glass windows for the Swedish Emmaus Lutheran Church in Seattle.
  • The address of the Finnish Seaman’s Lutheran Church in the Bronx in 1915.

Writing

Utilize your writing talents for both independent tasks and collaborative projects. Create independent stories from personal ideas or family histories about Finnish life, emigration, and genealogy, to be featured on our website.

Collaborative assignments will cover topics for Kusiner publications, involving teamwork, Zoom meetings, editor updates, and deadlines. Final pieces will be published in Kusiner, online, and in print for members at an extra fee. These publications are released triannually.
