Parish Records

Because parish Communion records are listed by village and farm name and because farm names often were used as a part of a person’s name, it is interesting to note the following farms. HisKi project findings were used as a starting point to identify parish villages.  Then Parish Communion Records of 1878-1881 were used to confirm villages and identify farm names. 7, 9 & 10

When looking at parish records, you may see these words:

  • Hantverkare translates to craftsman or artisan
  • Inhyses translates to lodger or tenant

Parish History

  • In 1351 Swedish King Magnus Eriksson handed over the patronage (responsibility) of the Porvoo parish along with the chapels of Sibo and Pernå to the monks in Padi’s monastery in Estonia
  • In 1428 the bishop and the cathedral parish of Åbo (Finnish- Turku) redeemed ownership of the parish and chapels for themselves
  • It is not known when Pernå became an independent parish
  • Lapinjarvi, Liljendal and Lovissa were originally a part of Pernå 8
