Kumlinge

Because parish Communion records are listed by village and farm name and because farm names often were used as a part of a person’s name, it is interesting to note the following farms. HisKi project findings were used as a starting point to identify parish villages. ⁷  Then Parish Communion Records of 1878 – 1894 and Land Records were used to confirm village and  identify farm names. ^{8, 9}

The term ‘Backstugufolk’ is listed at the end of the farm names in many villages.   ‘Backstugufolk‘ translates to the people who lived in the side cottages of a homestead.  They did not live in the main farm house.

• Centrally located on the island, but in an isolated area
• Built during the 1400’s
• Not built of local Åland Island red granite like most Åland churches, but of fieldstones of different colors
• Interior was updated in the 1600’s after the church reformation according to the new Lutheran liturgy
• Suffered damage during the Northern War when it was used as a stable by the Russian army
