Åland Islands

Föglö

Land & Livelihood

“Föglö is a group of islands in the southern Åland archipelago.  Sailing ships passed through the islands traveling between Sweden and Finland. When the Åland Islands became part of the Russian Empire in 1809 ships stopped in the port village of Degerby for customs declaration. Imported and exported goods would be cleared here.

Also, the marine pilot station in the village gave navigational assistance through the archipelago.  Steamboats on the Åbo (Turku) to Stockholm route stopped in Degerby and passengers to and from the Åland Islands would embark or disembark.” 1

This attached map of the Föglö Parish in 1938 displays on the HisKi project website, made available by the Genealogical Society of Finland6

Parish Records

HisKi project findings were used as a starting point to identify parish villages.  Then Parish Communion Records of 1870 – 1880, Land Records,  and other resources were used to confirm village and identify farm names.   7,8,9 Because parish communion records are listed by village and farm names and because farm names often were used as a part of a person’s name, it is interesting to note farm names.
