SFHS was fortunate to host another group of high school students from Finland this past October. The first time we hosted the students was October of 2014. The students are from two different high schools, one in Karleby and one in Kronoby. As part of the immigration themed school trip, the student visit SFHS to give reports on an ancestor that left Finland for the U.S. We held a reception for the students and invited members to join us. The next day the group, along with a few SFHS members, went to Bainbridge Island to visit the Carlson homestead. Our President, Bill Carlson, gave a presentation about his ancestors from Finland and showed the students where these ancestors settled. The day included a walk through the Carlson woods. A Pacific Northwest forest is different from the forests in Finland. We heard a lot of amazement about how big the trees are. One of the chaperones said “It is like a fairytale.” After visiting us, the group went on to La Conner, Washington. The students stayed with American families and experienced American high school during homecoming week.
