Nature in Contrast: The Enduring Patterns of Finnish Art and Design

Pia Holm will speak at our Annual Meeting & Luncheon on March 9, 2019.

The Finnish people have always lived close to nature. To magical forests. To sea and sky.

This connection continues to inspire Finnish artists and designers, influencing both choice of material and the strive to create objects of lasting quality. It is also a dialogue between the midnight sun of summer and the polar darkness of winter—a timeless tale that gives shape to powerful contrasts and subtle forms.

In her presentation she will shed light on these wondrous parallels between nature and creativity in Finnish art and design, as well as share her story of how she finds inspiration in Finland’s unique nature.

Pia Holm is a Swedish Finn (Finlandssvensk) artist and designer from the northwest coast of Finland. Already in early childhood, she was fascinated with different artistic techniques and the natural patterns she discovered in the forests and shorelines near her hometown of Korsnäs.

After graduating from high school in 1990, Pia studied art at the Nordic Art School before applying to the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. In 1997, she received her master’s degree in clothing design and soon pursued a successful career as an illustrator and textile print designer.

Her illustrations have appeared in leading Finnish Publications and her textile designs have secured a place in the collection of iconic Nordic design houses like Marimekko.

Pia has also organized children’s art workshops in Finland and Iceland, as well as collaborated on numerous public art projects.

Inspired by her love of gardening and plants, Pia is currently studying to become a professional gardener and is thrilled to add one more artistic media to her creative palette.

For more than a decade, she has lived with her family on the island of Kimito in southern Finland, where her studio and beloved garden are a short walk from the surrounding forest and sea.
