Lempi Maria Ojala was born in Kallionkieli on 29 Sep. 1891 and Christened 4 Oct. 1891. Her father was tenant farmer/ crofter Fredrik Viktor Kustaanpoika Ojala (Hakala) born 28 Jan. 1853--d. 17 Mar. 1901. Her mother was Ida Sofia Taavetintytär Lumia born 29 Feb. 1850. They married 8 Aug. 1880. Lempi Ojala obtained passport 3038 in Turku on 27.07.1910. The Finland Migration Institute database has her year of birth wrong, listing it as 1881. She was born in 1891 in Ikaalinen province in Pirkanmaa/ Birkaland, of which Tampere is the capital. She was born in the village of Kallionkieli at her mother's farm Lumia, although her father's surname was Ojala. She landed in New York harbor 25 Aug. 1910 aboard the S.S. Mauretania. She was 18 years old, a servant, and was bound for Massachusetts. She listed her mother as her nearest relative.On the 1920 U.S. Federal census for Seattle, King Co., WA lines 1 through 3, she and her married sister reside at 910 Davis Place. There is her brother-in-law Frank Maki 30, head of household, a logger, her sister Ida 3, a helper at a bakery, and her, Lempi Ojala 28, single, employed as a janitor at a bakery. All three entered the United States in 1910 and are listed as "aliens." Their neighbors are from Norway, Iowa, Massachusetts and Italy. There is an 18 Jan. 1919 birth certificate from Issaquah, King Co., WA showing the birth of a Tapio Eugene Kokko, the second child of a William Kokko 27, and a 25-year old Lempi Ojala, who may well be her.She appears in an index to naturalization records of the U.S. Dist. Court for Western Washington, Northern Div. (Seattle) 45/250.In 1923, she returned to Finland, or at least as far as England, and moved her widowed mother Ida Ojala to Issaquah for a long-term visit, or possibly permanently, landing in New York harbor aboard the _Berengaria_ 12 Oct. 1923.Her mother died 25 Jan. 1929.On the 1930 U.S. Federal census for Northern State Hospital, Sedro-Woolley, Skagit Co., WA she is listed as a single innmate, 38, from Finland with no occupation.She died 19 Nov. 1932 at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, Skagit Co., WA aged 41. She is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Issaquah, King Co., WA.Her older sister, Ida Alvina Maki (nee Ojala) died in Bremerton 14 Feb. 1968. She resided in Poulsbo, Kitsap Co., WA.
